Each year the Hood River County School District conducts a spelling contest throughout the district’s schools. The winner of each school then participates in the district-level spelling contest. This year’s district contest was held May 16.
All first-place district winners are eligible to compete in the state spelling contest Sept. 1, to be held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds during the Oregon State Fair.
The 2012 top two district finalists by age division are:
Division I, grades K-5
First place — Jane Filiault, Westside Elementary School, fifth grade
Second place — Kelsey Stewart, Mid Valley Elementary School, fifth grade
Division II, grades 6-8
First place — Maddi Carr, Hood River Middle School, eighth grade
Second place — Symeon Walker, Wy’east Middle School, seventh grade
Division III, grades 9-12
First place — Siena Harlin, Hood River Valley High School, 10th grade
Second place — Rocne Scribner, Hood River Valley High School, 12th grade
