HRV water polo wins first home game

The Hood River Valley High School water polo team racked up a 15-4 win over Reynolds High School in its first home game at the Hood River Aquatic Center on Oct. 8. While the two teams played a fairly close game during the first half, the Hood River team plowed past the visiting team in the second half, benefiting from the superior conditioning achieved by practicing in one of the few pools in Oregon that is deep on both ends.

The Hood River team is new this year and is playing as a HRVHS club sport against other schools’ junior varsity teams to gain experience. With last week’s win, the team is now 3-1 going into the toughest game of the season against David Douglas High School.

Coach Dave Cameron said he was particularly proud of the team’s statistics for the game because every player on the team had marks for goals, assists, attempted goals, steals or saves.

“We’re really trying to keep sight of the fact that we’ll have the greatest success if each player on the team contributes, rather than relying on just a few exceptionally strong players,” Cameron said.

That strategy paid off against Reynolds, with seven Hood River players making goals. Goals were scored by Connor Dunn (3), Arthur Finstad (3), Stan Ocheskey (3), Texx Shwiff (2), Russel Grim (2), Myles Cameron (1) and Blake Winner (1).

Cameron said the team also played solid defense to limit Reynolds’ opportunities to take shots on the goal.

“That was a big improvement over previous games, when our goalie was sometimes left to face an attacker without much assistance from field players,” he said.
