Horizon Hawks soccer nabs first victory

League action starts next week for Horizon Christian

Horizon Christian School bounced back from a 0-3 start to its season with a 4-1 road win Wednesday at Southwest Christian in Beaverton.

The Hawks scored four first-half goals against the Wildcats, who were playing their first match this fall.

“It was their first game, so I think we had that advantage on them — having played three games already,” coach Rick Whitaker said. “We played a lot better than we had. We were a lot more spread out and passing much better.”

Horizon’s Mason Bloomster scored two goals; teammate Aman Mann scored a goal and assisted on another by James Rovianek.

“We attacked the ball and followed our shots a lot better, all the way to the goal,” Whitaker said.

Wednesday’s match marked the end of the non-league season for Horizon. The Hawks begin district matches Thursday at City Christian (2-1). The two teams played Sept. 8 in the Trout Lake Tournament, where City won 6-2. Whitaker said much of the focus in practice the next few days will be on defense.

“We can beat City if we shore up our defense and keep the ball moving,” he said.

Thursday’s match begins at 4:15 p.m. in Portland.
