Horizon soccer holds tie for first in league

A three-match win streak has vaulted Horizon Christian School’s boys soccer team into a first-place tie in the District 5 standings.

The Hawks improved to 2-0 in league with their 4-3 win Monday at North Clackamas Christian School in Oregon City.

“So far so good,” Coach Rick Whitaker said. “I’m trying to keep us level headed - not looking too far ahead. We take ‘em one game at a time and we’ll be alright.”

Whitaker said he will use a 10-day respite between matches to shore up his team’s defense. “We need to fine-tune some things to lock in our defense,” he said.

Conversely, there has been nothing wrong of late with the Hawks’ offense. On Monday, Horizon received goals from Jared Davis, Aman Mann and Mason Bloomster (two), while Austyn Whitaker added an assist.

Tim Johnson earned the win in goal for Horizon; he received defensive help from stopper Grant Lynn and midfielders Bryce Smith and Ian Rasmussen.

“Those three guys really played strong games,” coach Whitaker said.

Horizon (3-3 overall) plays its next match at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at Columbia Christian (0-2, 0-4) in Portland.
