Ziegner remains undefeated to lead HRV varsity tennis

Boys and girls teams have bright spots despite losing to Pendleton

Scottie Ziegner continued his unbeaten streak with a 6-1, 6-3 win Tuesday against Pendleton’s Peter Anderton. The Hood River Valley High School varsity boys home tennis match Tuesday went to the Buckaroos 5-3, with Ziegner winning the only singles dual of the afternoon and the other two wins coming from doubles pairs Billy Edwards/Patrick Humann and Jonathan Hale/Nate Miller.

“I’m trying to come to the net more, to approach and be more aggressive,” Ziegner said Wednesday before practice. “I’ve had a good start and am going to use these wins as motivation for the rest of the season.”

Coach Jon Hiatt said he expects Ziegner, a sophomore, to have a good shot at qualifying for the state tournament, held May 16-18 at Tualatin Hills and Portland Tennis Center. Last year he finished sixth in the district, two slots shy of a state appearance.

In addition to Ziegner, Hiatt noted a great performance Tuesday from the duo of Edwards and Humann.

“Tuesday was the first match they have played together and they teamed up to play a fantastic match,” he said. “Their styles complement one another and they seem to work really well together.”

Varsity girls

The HRV varsity girls traveled to Pendleton the same day and faced a similar fate as the boys. The 6-2 loss was highlighted by first wins from first and second doubles pairs, Vanessa Sandoval/Sophie Oswald and Anna Gumperlein/Petra Knapp. In singles action Emilee Ziegner, Claire Rawson, Miranda Starr and Olivia Newcomb were unable to come away with a win.

“Emilee struggled to find her rhythm in windy conditions against a tough opponent,” coach Justine Ziegner commented. “Elle and Naomi hit their stride and set each other up at the net for well-executed put-away shots, while Emma and Hannah saw the court extremely well and did a great job of putting the ball where their opponents weren’t. Petra and Anna had close games that just didn’t go their way and Miranda came out strong after being sick for the last few days, but her consistent opponent kept chipping away at the ball and wore her down with long rallies.”
