The Hood River Valley High School Speech and Debate team achieved historic results in Bend.
At the OSAA District 14 championship tournament, Hood River qualified eight students for state, with a ninth student going as an alternate.
This represents the largest contingent Hood River has sent to state championships in the young team’s history, going back to its founding in 2005.
Qualifiers were: senior Jack Patterson, first place in Poetry Reading; senior Ty Bofferding, first place in Radio Commentary; senior Luis Santillan, first place in Memorized Humorous; senior Jessica Wagar, second place in Poetry Reading; Nils Engbersen and Garrett Kelley (sophomores), first place team Public Forum Debate; freshman Hannah Hart, third place in Impromptu; junior Austin Spezia-Schwiff, qualified by default.
In Student Congress senior Jade James took third place in both Radio Commentary and After-Dinner Speaking.
The team of Jack Patterson and Ty Bofferding had already qualified for both state and national championships in Public Forum Debate on the strength of their previous results.
First-year coach Jonathan Estey was thrilled by the team’s results and is looking forward to the OSAA state championships at Western Oregon University, April 18-20.
