Free Comic Book Day

Do you want a free comic book? Who doesn’t? Hood River County Library District will be handing out free comic books for readers of all ages on Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 4.

Free comics for kids, teens, and adults will be available at the Hood River, Cascade Locks, and Parkdale libraries.

Potential titles that the libraries may be giving away this year include Star Wars, Infinity, Sesame Street, Superman, Archie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Smurfs, Archie and much more.

Free Comic Book Day has been around since 2002 on the first Saturday in May. It is just what it sounds like: Participating stores and organizations hand out free comics. It is a way to promote literacy generally, and reading comics specifically.

Comics and graphic novels have been recognized in the past several decades as a literature and art form in their own right, and this day celebrates that.

Free Comic Book Day is sponsored by Ape Entertainment, Archie Comics, Bongo Comics, Boom Studios, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, IDW Publishing, Image, Marvel, Papercutz, United Plankton Pictures and Viz Media.
