Saturday’s Summit Invitational track meet brought 12 teams from across central Oregon to Bend Saturday for one of the last major meets of the season before district and state championships later this month.
Hood River Valley High School boys finished mid-pack with 72.5 points – good enough for sixth place overall. Redmond won the meet with 125 points, followed by Summit with 116 and Mountain View with 99 to round out the top three. The girls’ field was dominated by Summit High School, with a commanding 244-point finish. Ridgeview was next best with less than half of Summit’s mark – 92.5, followed by Mountain View with 78.5 and HRVHS with 52.5.
The best marks of the day for the Eagles came from senior sprinter Cesar Rodriguez, who set a new Columbia River Conference benchmark for the season in the 200-meter event with a time of 22.36, good enough for second place in the event behind La Pine’s Jeremy Desrosiers (22.01). Rodriguez also won the 100 meter event over 30 other competitors and ran the anchor leg of boys 4x100 relay team, which finished third out of nine. Other top finishes for the boys came from Wyatt Webber in the long jump (2nd, 29-09) and throwers Eli Fults and Sebastian Barajas, who finished second in the shot put and discus, respectively.
On the girls’ side, the hosts and five-time defending 5A state champions, Summit, used big numbers and athletic talent to place multiple athletes in the top five of almost every event of the meet. Behind Ridgeview and Mountain View, the HRV girls had a decent showing considering the competition they were up against. Anna Schlosser’s 400-meter time of 61.10 was a personal best and was fast enough for second place in the meet and a No. 2 benchmark on the current CRC leaderboard. Leading HRV in field events were Zoe Peterson’s fourth-place high jump and third in pole vault finishes.
The team will train over the next two weeks and use the remaining two meets — a May 3 invitational in Gresham and the CRC Last Chance meet May 17 in Hermiston — to fine-tune leading up to the CRC championship, set for May 17-18 at Hood River Valley High School.
