Cascade Locks coins help Giving Tree

Ducks fans in Cascade Locks are celebrating after the University of Oregon’s victory in last month’s “Civil War Penny Drive” at Cascade Locks School.

The penny drive raised $107.51 to be used to purchase Christmas toys for children of the community.

On Tuesday PTO presented a “Civil War Penny Drive” check to the City of Cascade Locks “Giving Tree” at City Hall. Staff will use the funds to fill gift requests for children in need this Christmas

In the penny drive, if students dropped silver in the bin, it subtracted that many pennies from the team — so if a nickel went into the UO bin, UO had to give five pennies to OSU. The results were: U of O, $26.70 in silver, $19.50 in pennies; OSU $46.45 in silver, $14.86 in pennies.

The photo shows Miles (grade 3), and Esther, a kindergartner, representing UO and OSU.

Miles roots for the Ducks because “they win so many games” and Esther (kindergarten) roots for the Beavers because they gnaw woods and can cut down trees.

Principal Kim Vogel is an OSU graduate and had to wear Duck clothing to school as a result of the loss.
