Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort, Windells and USASA have teamed up this winter to take the resort’s annual rail jam series to the next level. The 10-event series — run this year by Windells Academy, hosted by MHM and operated under the USASA umbrella — features snowboarding and freestyle skiing, rail jam, halfpipe, slopestyle and boardercross events weekly through March. Overall winners from each discipline in each age division qualify for nationals, held at the end of the season at Copper Mountain, Colo.
In addition, this year the overall winners of the first two rail jams (both skiing and snowboarding) will be invited to compete for the national championship rail title on the same course that the X-Games will use.
The first round of competition took place Saturday at Meadows’ Shipyard Park. The rail jam contest drew about 25 Hood River-area skiers and snowboarders, many of whom made their way to the top of the scoreboards.
The series continues Jan. 12 with a second rail jam. Entry is open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages.
