Nine Hood River residents, including four Hood River Valley high school students, traveled to Haiti June 22-29 to provide medical relief.
The team is one of several per year from Medical Student Missions (medicalstudentmissions.org) that provide primary care to the people of Verettes in the rural Artibonite Valley.
The June 2013 team provided medical care to 800 people, participated in tours of a sustainable organic farm, two local hospitals, a voodoo temple and shrine, the local market and a mountaintop clinic, which took two hours to hike to.
Medical Student Missions’ goals are to provide medical relief to Haiti and expose medical students to the complex medical, socioeconomic, and political aspects of global health, disaster relief, poverty and international travel.
