There will be no layoffs of teachers in the Hood River County School District in 2013-14.
Meanwhile, the Hood River County School Board on Wednesday approved the administration’s recommendation to appoint Rich Polkinghorn, currently the vice principal of Hood River Valley High School, to interim principal next year.
The board also approved the hiring of Kyle Rosselle as vice principal for HRVHS.
Three classified positions will be cut and a variety of employees in schools and at the district office will have reduced hours.
“The reductions overall are more minor than originally thought, as we determined it was not necessary, and we found ways to place people,” said Kevin Noreen, district human resources director.
Original estimates of job cutbacks were seven certified (teaching) and seven classified positions, as part of the district’s need to cut $1.4 million from the budget next year. The shift of people came about with the help of two involuntary transfers but there were no layoffs or reductions in the certified ranks.
“Through the normal course of resignations and retirements, we were able to make up some of those (reductions),” Noreen said.
The three classified layoffs were a custodial position at Mid Valley Elementary and instructional assistant and media assistant positions at the high school. Three confidential (district staff) positions saw varying hourly reductions, and all confidential staff schedules will be reduced by one hour per week.
