As a repeat from last season, the HRV girls team finished in dominating fashion to claim the top individual titles and the overall team title. The boys team garnered the overall district title as well, although the individual combined title went to Eli Holeman of The Dalles.

The team brings six of its top male and female racers to the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association state championship, slated for March 7-8 at Mt. Hood SkiBowl. Last year the HRV girls won the combined state title and the boys finished sixth, giving the team a third-place overall finish.

“My goal this season is a top three finish for the girls and a top five for the boys at state,” coach Scott Keillor said this week. “We have an awesome group of kids and I think we’ll have a great showing at state.”

Leading the way in leauge action all season, sophomore standout Lucy McLean finished first in every league race she entered to claim the giant slalom and combined individual titles by a solid margin. Teammate Korey Cimock, a junior, was runner-up in the overall standings and district champion in the slalom category. Seniors Sadie Shepard, Molly Clark and Allie Ferrick finished third, fourth and ninth overall and will anchor the team in its quest for a state podium finish.

On the boys side, the Eagles won four of six races this season, with The Dalles taking the other two. The overall district team title was secured with a second-place individual finish by freshman William Lamer, a third-place finish by senior Ryan Colesar and a fifth-place finish by sophomore Patrick Crompton. Holeman of The Dalles went unbeaten all season, other than finishing second in the opening slalom race to Lamer.

Crompton earned the Ski Meister award for the special award for the HRV boys.

The team will be represented at state by Cimock, Shepard, Clark, Ferrick, Hannah Bergemann and Kayla Van Hoose for the girls and Lamer, Colersar, Ferrick, Cromton, Levi Roeseler and Nick Cooper for the boys. McLean will not be present, as she races in Mission Ridge, Wash., at the same time in the U18 Western Regional Championships, which brings together top racers from across the west.

Keillor gave a special acknowledgement to Bergemann, Van Hoose, Crompton, Roeseler and Cooper. The five will represent the team in both downhill and freestyle state competition this week. Halfpipe and slopestyle state contests will run Wednesday at Mt. Hood Meadows and a rail jam contest will be held Thursday at SkiBowl. Sanctioned freestyle events are new to the OISRA but appear to be gaining momentum as a legitimate element of high school ski competition.

In terms of both numbers and talent, Hood River Valley High School boys and girls freestyle ski teams dominated Mt. Hood Ski League action this season. After a final league contest last weekend, district champions were announced in the league’s slopestyle, rail jam, halfpipe and skiercross formats.

Claiming district titles for the boys were Brendan Kerr in slopestyle, Tucker FitzSimons in rail jam and halfpipe and Patrick Crompton in skiercross. As a freshman, FitzSimons earned the combined individual title, followed by Levi Roeseler and Brendan Kerr in second and third. The overall team title also went to the HRV boys ahead of West Linn in second and Sandy in third. The coveted Ski Meister trophy went to Crompton.

The list of league champions continues with the HRV girls squad, which took the top two slots in all but the halfpipe (champion was Maya Bernhard-Davidson of The Dalles). Hannah Bergemann nabbed first in slopestyle and rail jam and second in the halfpipe and skiercross which made her the easy candidate as the individual combined champion. Kayla Van Hoose was second in combined standings. Korey Cimock took the skiercross title.

The team competes this week at state contests on Mount Hood. Freestyle events are scheduled for March 6 at Mt. Hood Meadows, while the rest of the HRVHS ski team competes at Ski Bowl March 7-8 in slalom and GS action.
