‘Feast of Words’ raises volumes for Hood River library

Saturday’s Feast of Words turned out to be an encyclopedia of giving.

The third-annual benefit for, and at, Hood River Library raised $17,800; about $4,000 over the goal set by the Foundation Board.

Attendance was 250, about 100 people more than expected.

“We are delighted with the results,” said Foundation board president Jen Bayer, who guided planning of the event along with Heather Staten, Amber Goeke and Polly Wood.

“I’m most excited that we filled the building with so many people who show how much they care about the library.”

“Our thanks to the sponsors, to the cooks, to the many volunteers and to the community members who came out in support; anyone who opened up their pocketbooks,” Bayer said.

Part of the proceeds will go to funding the new teen section of the library, Director Buzzy Nielsen announced.

Attendees enjoyed a smorgasbord of sandwiches, salads, pasta dishes and many kinds of desserts, and bid on silent auction items while awaiting the live auction.

Food was organized by Polly Wood, who said she was delighted with the quality and variety of sweet and savory goodies provided by local restaurants and individuals. Music was by Lolo Motion (Mark Daly, Karen Enns, Ryan McAlexander and Randy Bell) and David Griffiths called the lively auction.

Highlights included $700 for Karen Watson’s “Trees” painting, purchased by Ann and Pat Frodel, and the $275 bid for two tickets worth $75 each to the sold-out April 14 Storm Large concert, bought by Amy Williams on behalf of her daughter, Brooklyn, a May Street fifth-grader.
