This week volunteers at Adopt A Dog have selected Jasper as the program’s adoptable pet of the week. They describe him as follows:
“Jasper is about 4 years old and a Karelian Bear Dog. He is an impressive dog with so much possibility for the right owner. He’s attentive and calm, and loves to hang out and peruse the horizon! So a solid wood fence would be a bummer for him — but make no mistake — he needs at least a 5-foot fence because he will jump anything less if he gets a whiff of something out there.
“Jasper is in a foster home now and we’re learning just how great a dog he is. He is living with a young puppy and at first, had no time for the silliness of the frisky pup, but after a week or so, he decided to relax a bit and began to find her quite entertaining! He has even slacked off and has been seen playing with the little tyke on more than a few occasions.
“He still considers himself more of a people dog, though, and craves attention. He absolutely loves a good cuddle and belly rub, or a short game of chase around the yard — and then he’s back to work. He is calm when left alone inside, too.
“Jasper needs an experienced owner willing to be as dedicated to him as Jasper is to his family. Although city life would be OK for him as long as he got lots of regular exercise and mental stimulation, he truly enjoys the fresh air and great outdoors.
“He is a hunter, through and through, and has brought home a few chickens for dinner — and we’re not talking store-bought! But he’s just doing what his breed does! He is fine with other dogs, great with horses, and has lived with cats nicely, too. We will only let him be adopted to a home with at least a 5-foot, secure fence.
“Karelian Bear Dogs are extremely loyal and make great family pets to confident owners.”
Jasper is current on shots, micro-chipped, house-trained and neutered. His adoption fee is $400; cash or check only, please. The fee to adopt is charged to recoup standard veterinary expenses.
