Columbia River Conference announces All-League awards

Giovani Magana was named Columbia River Conference boys soccer player of the year for 2013.

With the exception of the varsity boys soccer team, which played a first-round playoff game Tuesday evening, 2013 fall athletics at Hood River Valley High School are a thing of the past. As is tradition at the end of each season, coaches from each of the four Columbia River Conference teams vote on the top athletes in their respective sports, who earn All-Conference honors.

The many names below are highlighted by Player of the Year honors that went to Giovani Magana in boys soccer and Sophie Grace in girls soccer and Coach of the Year honors that went to Kristen Uhler for girls cross country and Kevin Haspela for girls soccer.

HRV awards are as follows:

Boys soccer

Finished season 13-1-1 overall, 6-0 CRC (post-season not complete)

Player of the Year: Giovani Magana

Goalie of the Year: Quique Rueda

First team: Oscar Munos, Uriel Torres, Quique Rueda

Second Team: Danny Romero

Honorable Mention: Alex Gutierrez, Rogelio Lachino, Biran Manzo, Tuan Nguyen

Girls soccer

Finished season 7-5-2 overall, 4-0-2 CRC

Co-Player of the Year: Sophie Grace

Coach of the year: Kevin Haspela

First Team: Miga McCurdy, Collete Zack, Sophie Grace, Cielo Rivera

Second Team: Kara Kiyokawa, Korey Cimock, Laura Delatorre, Monique Diaz, Vanessa Silva


Finished 1-8 overall, 0-3 in CRC

First Team: Steven Swafford

Second Team: Jeremy Fischer, Wyatt Webber, Trevin Franks, Martin Lanthaler, Alix Jiminez

Honorable Mention: Garrett Kelly, Jackson Hukari, Adam McCaw


Finished season 4-15 overall, 3-6 CRC

First Team: Tabitha Merten

Second Team: Jestena Mattson

Cross Country

Girls finished first in CRC and fifth in state, boys finished third in CRC

First team: Sascha Bockius, Daisy Dolan, Ricardo Castillo, Justin Crosswhite

Second team: Lauren Robinson, Sophia Marble

Girls Coach of the Year: Kristen Uhler
