Kegler's Corner: Ebersole stars in Senior Tourney

The results just came in for the recent 2013 in-league Senior Tournament held at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes. Association manager and organizer extraordinaire, Joyce Ebersole, had her left side tosses in the groove as she simply cleaned up, taking the top three spots in the mixed doubles event and, just for the heck of it, finishing second in eomen’s foubles. Clearly, this makes Joyce our latest Bowler of the Week.

In other tournament action, Joyce and Gordon Sim teamed up to win the mixed doubles, Joyce Martin and Pauline Strange won the women’s doubles, Minnie Allen won the women’s singles, Stuart Sneider and Ron Baumsteiger won the men’s doubles and Clifford Beat won the men’s singles.

The new tournament format was a resounding competitive success, thanks to Joyce’s hard work setting it up. The results prove that it was competitive because just about everybody had a chance to win. That means the handicap calculation was just about right. As we could see from the results, they were all close, except for men’s singles, where Clifford got hot and swamped everybody by a whopping 148 pins to take the title.

Here are the top three finishers in each event (handicaps are included):

Mixed doubles: first: Joyce Ebersole and Gordon Sim, 3,674; second: Joyce Ebersole and George Buck, 3,662; third: Joyce Ebersole and Eric Plimmer, 3,655

Women’s doubles: first: Joyce Martin and Pauline Strange, 3,715; second: Joyce Ebersole and Frani Thompson, 3,688; third: Betty Nance and Charlotte Severns, 3,677

Women’s singles: first: Minnie Allen, 1,913; second: Joyce Hert, 1,873; third: Joyce Martin, 1,870

Men’s doubles: first: Stuart Sneider and Ron Baumsteiger, 3,544; second: Jesse Flores and Randy Neito, 3,528; third: Lyle Sayler and Gordon Sim, 3,510

Men’s singles: first: Clifford Beat, 2,012; second: Jesse Flores, 1,864; third: Ross Bluestone, 1,842

In league action at the Lanes, congratulations are in order for the team Three Fingers Deep, which won the first round in the Monday night Industrial league. Bowling for the team are Quinton Cox, Chris Perry, Matt Webber, Jim Youtsey and Jason Kahler.

Smooth senior stylist Gordon Sim went on a recent rampage in the Thursday afternoon Lads & Lassie league, where he tossed big 278 and 266 games for a 745 series. That was the top score of the week, and for the seventh time in this young season, Gordon made the Team of the Week; he leads everybody in that category with the most appearances on the big five.

Since we skipped a column last week, we’ll combine the top league scores from the past two weeks. In addition to Sim’s fine outing, three more 700s were fired. Josh Worth racked up a solid 720 series in the Wednesday night Fraternal, Dan Wahl erupted in the Tuesday Nite Mixed for a super 715 series and Mark Chabotte notched a 706 set in the Monday night Industrial.

And there was more notable action: Master carpenter Jeff Chenier just missed the team of the week after rolling a fine 686 series in the Industrial that was capped by a nice 265 game; young Levi Phelps, a graduate of juniors at Orchard Lanes, just keeps getting better and better and is knocking on the door of carrying a big-time 200 average after tossing a great 669 series in the Fraternal; Carl Casey shook off some rust in the Tuesday Nite Mixed as he tossed a solid 664 series; Ciena Brittle, who starred with the award-winning HRVHS girls bowling team a couple of years ago, hit pay dirt in the Tuesday Nite Mixed where she racked up a 211 game and 552 series, and finally, not to be outdone by all these kids, Clifford Beat continued his hot streak in the Thursday afternoon Lads & Lassies, where he vaulted over that milestone 600 mark with a super 609 set.

Great bowling and Happy Thanksgiving everybody. Next week we’ll have the results from the 52nd annual Hood River City Bowling Championships.

Team of the Week:

Gordon Sim (7), 745

Josh Worth (4), 720

Dan Wahl (1), 715

Mark Chabotte (3), 706

Pat Olson (5), 687
