Apply now for ‘Most Valuable Student’

The Elks “Most Valuable Student” applications are now available online at The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need.

The deadline for local applications is Dec. 6.

Applications will advance through local, district and state competitions to reach national judging. The top 20 finalists will be vying for two first-place awards of $50,000; two second-place awards of $40,000; and two third-place awards of $30,000. The remaining 14 finalists will receive awards of $20,000.

The 480 runners-up will receive fifth-place scholarships of $4,000. This does not include the money received from local, district or state.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must be a high school senior who is a citizen of the United States. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.

Male and female applicants compete separately.

College students are not eligible to apply.

Applicants are encouraged to fill out the applications online and turn them in at the Hood River Elks Lodge at Third and Cascade streets. The Hood River Elks awards are as follows:

n First place — $1,000 (male and female)

n Second place — $700 (male and female)

n Third place — $500

The first-place winner will then advance to the district level with awards up to $2,000. The district winners will then go to state contest and will automatically compete at nationals.
