Observers sought for fall bird count

The 2013 Klickitat County Fall North American Migration Count will take place Saturday, Sept. 21. Observers are being recruited for counts in a variety of habitats in Klickitat County, from the Douglas fir subalpine forests near Trout Lake and Mount Adams, to the sage steppe at the western edge of the Columbia Basin, and in between, a beautiful oak-pine woodland habitat.

Over the past 14 fall counts (http://bit.ly/15AIwtt), participants have averaged 127 count day species, with the help of 21 observers. During the spring counts (http://bit.ly/17osraK), the same average number of observers (21) has observed on average 155 species, or almost 25 percent more species.

“If you have any interest in helping, or in starting such counts in your county, please let me know,” said Bob Hansen, one of the organizers of the events. “Recruiting observers is an ongoing, year-round activity.” He can be reached at 503-881-5889 or bobhansen@gorge.net.
