RARE volunteer serves Gorge

Mid-Columbia Economic Development District is hosting an AmeriCorps volunteer through the Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) program run out of the University of Oregon’s Community Service Center.

Maggie Hanna will be with MCEDD working as the Agora Investment Platform coordinator for an 11-month placement that started in September 2013.

Hanna was raised on a ranch in Hanover, Colo. She graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, in spring 2011 with a degree in history and urban studies: urban environment.

Following her time in San Antonio she spent two years working as a program associate for El Pomar Foundation in Colorado Springs, Colo. Much of her work with El Pomar focused on grant making in rural regions of the state, as well as event planning and meeting facilitation.

Most recently, Hanna spent the summer working for the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust, monitoring existing conservation easements. She is excited to be in the Gorge learning about this part of Oregon and enjoying the many opportunities to get out and explore.

Hanna’s work with the Agora Investment Platform will be focused on community outreach and education. Her work will support the matching of community needs and projects to potential financing sources.

This work will involve financial institutions, private and community foundations, regional agencies, their constituents, local businesses, nonprofits and service providers in their efforts to create places that balance economic vitality, the needs of the physical environment and strong, healthy communities throughout the Columbia Gorge.

These efforts will be furthered through collaborative, regional efforts to address some of the challenges and opportunities the Gorge communities face.

The Mid-Columbia Economic Development District, serves Klickitat, Skamania, Hood River, Wasco, and Sherman counties by promoting the creation of family-wage jobs, the diversification of the economic base, and the growth, development and retention of business and industry.
