The Next Door has announced its 2014 Volunteer of the Year, Catherine Whalen.

Whalen has been on the Next Door’s Board of Directors since 1999, serving as Chair for the last three years. Her guidance, leadership and advocacy have helped shape The Next Door for 15 years, ensuring that its many programs are responsive and accountable to the community.

Whalen joined the Board after helping found Families First, a program of The Next Door that has helped hundreds of parents in Wasco County learn more effective parenting skills and keep their children safe, healthy and loved.

Though she works full time for Mid-Columbia Medical Center, Whalen always finds time to share her wisdom with The Next Door and numerous other organizations that serve the community.

The Next Door is a local nonprofit whose mission is opening doors to new possibilities by strengthening children and families and improving communities. Staff members work with thousands of people in the Columbia Gorge.
