Sports briefs for Feb. 22

A busy weekend for high school sports

Hood River Valley High School and Horizon Christian School athletes will be busy this weekend representing their schools in season-ending district and state contests. For HRVHS, wrestlers are at Marshal High School for their 5A Special District II regional tournament, Nordic skiers are in Bend for their state race, skiers are at Skibowl for their final district race and eight swimmers who qualified are competing at the state meet at Mt. Hood Community College.

Horizon’s boys basketball team is in Hermiston looking to repeat as Big Sky Conference champions; if they do, they’ll host an OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires second round state playoff game March 1.

Free youth golf clinics March 8 and 22

Indian Creek Golf and Country Club is hosting a free golf clinic for middle school and high school students from 10:30 a.m. to noon March 8 and another free clinic March 22 for ages 6-13. The goal is to get kids excited about local golfing programs, in particular the Hood River Valley High school golf team, which starts the spring season soon and is short on players. HRVHS snowboard team competes

After a late start to the season, Hood River Valley snowboard team competed in its first Oregon Interscholastic Snowboard Association event of the year last Friday at Mt Hood Meadows. Leading the way in the slopestyle contest against in the four-team Gorge League (Hood River, Sandy, Southridge and Aloha) was Maddie Collins, who finished in first place out of a field of 12 riders and is looking for a repeat performance after claiming the Gorge League title in the same event last season.

The boys field of 40 featured some tough competition on the course of jumps, rails and sliders. Ethan Field was HRV’s top finisher at fourth place overall. Field was one of the team’s top finishers last year and ended the season with a 10th place slopestyle result at the state competition.

The 16-person team has three more events before the March 12-16 state championships at Mount Bachelor; this weekend it’s in banked slalom/boardercross and March 8 and 9 it’s slopestyle and halfpipe.
