Defending champion Bruce Ludwig will face nine other community members in the 2014 SMART Tongue Twister Tournament, Feb. 28 at a new location, Columbia Center for the Arts.
Other competitors include 4-H coordinator Dani Annala, auctioneer Ron Chamness, Full Sail’s Sandra Evans, actor and writer Julie Jindal, singer Char Mayer, county commissioner Maui Meyer, CCA director Gregory Smith, Westside teacher Amalia Shaner, and HRVHS junior Noah Tauscher
The event is a benefit for the Hood River County Start Making A Reader Today program.
The event starts at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for all ages. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. The evening will include music by the Unrelated Mayers — Char Mayer and her musical partner, Tim Mayer.
There will be a “chance auction” drawing for a variety of locally donated prizes, including books, dinner and grocery gift certificates, bottled ale, and a subscription to the New York Times.
The audience will have the chance to try tongue twisters, for a $5 donation and the chance to earn more tickets for the drawings.
Competition judges will be Kim Vogel, Mike Glover, and Cindy Mitchell, Cascade Locks Justice of the Peace.
SMART is a nonprofit organization providing literacy help to children in grades K-3 and, new this year, to Head Start preschoolers. SMART operates in the schools but all funding from the program comes from private donations.
