New Columbia River Basin endorsement required
As of Jan. 1, anglers in pursuit of salmon, steelhead or sturgeon in the Columbia River and its tributaries throughout Oregon will be required to purchase an additional fishing endorsement, and although the added cost may be hard to swallow, recreational anglers will largely support how the money will be used.
The endorsement is part of the 2013 Senate Bill 830 and is part of a larger suite of changes aimed at removing commercial gillnets form the lower Columbia River. The fee is $9.75 a year or $1 a day (available wherever fishing licenses are sold) and is required in addition to an annual regular fishing license and Combined Angling Tag.
The new endorsement is required when fishing for salmon, steelhead or sturgeon in all rivers and tributaries in Oregon that ultimately empty into the Columbia River, as well as the Columbia River itself.
“This is part of a package of Columbia River fish management and reform actions adopted by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission and their Washington counterparts,” ODFW notes in an explanation of the new requirement. “The package includes a higher priority for sport fishing in the mainstem Columbia River, improved commercial fishing with gill nets in off-channel areas of the lower Columbia River, use of alternative commercial fishing gears and techniques in the mainstem lower Columbia River, and improved fish conservation by better targeting of hatchery runs.”
Under SB 830, the endorsement is set to expire in 2021. Current license fees are $33 for a regular annual resident angling license ($106.25 for nonresident), $9.75 for the new endorsement and an additional $26.50 for the Combined Angling Harvest tag (youth, senior and temporary rates vary).
