Kegler's Corner: Randy Nieto is latest Bowler of the Week

Team of the Week

Jeff Miller (5), 718

Mark Chabotte (4), 700

Lynn Spellman (4), 692

Randy Nieto (1), 681

Earning top honors last week was righty Randy Nieto, who scorched the boards with a 267 game that propelled him to a solid 681 series in the Monday night Industrial league at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes. The pro painter from across the river ended up 132 pins over his average, the most by anyone at the lanes last week, which makes him the latest Bowler of the Week.

Jeff Brittle wasn’t far off that pace after notching a 675 series in the powerhouse Wednesday evening Fraternal league. Brittle, who without question rolls the biggest roundhouse curve this side of New York City, sure had things his way in the third game of the night. He blasted the first 10 strikes in a row, but just missed on that 11th toss, to finish with a 287 game; he completed his three-game series 108 pins over his average.

It’s difficult to understand what it’s like to be proficient at this game when you’ve been at it for nearly nine decades. Sure, most of us don’t make it that far at all and many of us 20 and 30 years younger are so stiff and sore we would never entertain the challenge of competing in bowling. But, those people are not Esther Yarnell. She is a legend around here. The spry nonagenarian still bowls league regularly.

At 93, Esther says, “bowling keeps me young.” She is truly amazing. A few years ago she bowled a match with our local HR News sports editor (Ben McCarty) and handily bested that young whipper-snapper. Well, she was at it again last week in the Wednesday afternoon senior Colts and Fillies league, where she topped all women in scoring and just missed a 200 game in the process. Esther rolled a 194 game and 498 series. We could make a claim that numbers like those may be some kind of record but we know Esther. She will probably top those scores next week.

Great bowling, everybody.
