PARKDALE NEWS: Parkdale School carnival plans are under way

Although it’s cold outside, you know spring is just around the corner when Parkdale Elementary School starts gearing up for its annual carnival.

This year’s carnival will be held on Friday, March 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is the largest fundraiser of the year for the school.

As usual there will be game booths, activity rooms, cake walks, food, and a raffle with fantastic prizes from various businesses in the community.

Raffle tickets are $1 each and will be available starting Feb. 14.

In order to get ready for the carnival, the Parkdale PTO is looking for volunteers, raffle prize donations and cash donations which go directly toward helping the students.

If you are interested in helping or have a donation, you can contact Sarah Wilson at 503-819-4092, Parkdale Elementary School at 541-352-6255, or send donations to Parkdale Elementary School at P.O. Box 69, Parkdale, OR 97041.

This month’s Parkdale OSU Home Extension Study Group will be meeting with other groups in the area at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Hood River Extension classroom, 2990 Experiment Station Drive in Hood River.

“Quinoa and the Economics of ‘New’ Grains” will be topic for the presentation by Jon Gehrig.

Quinoa was “discovered” in recent years by western and North American people wanting to eat healthier because it is a complete protein and whole grain, though its new popularity in those markets has made it less affordable by the many indigenous groups who have used it a diet staple.

A quinoa-themed potluck will follow the meeting and is open to the community.

The next Parkdale Grange breakfast will be served Sunday, Feb. 9, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. at the Grange Hall.

Don’t cook that day; just come out to enjoy eggs and sausage with pancakes or biscuits and gravy, homemade applesauce and a beverage with your friends and neighbors.

Breakfast is just $6 for adults and $4 for children over 4 years of age.

The Parkdale Garden Club will be meeting Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Parkdale Grange Hall.

“We’re always looking for new members,” said Garden Club president Jean Hardman.

“In addition to keeping up the Parkdale Memorial Garden (at Dee Highway and Baseline Road), we provide bouquets of flowers for local businesses during National Flower Week in June, make swags at Christmas for the local businesses, and help with social projects such as supporting Helping Hands Against Violence.”

Meetings often include lessons such as floral arranging and how to create hanging gardens.

In addition, the Parkdale Garden Club will be hosting the district meeting this April and is currently planning the event.

For more information, contact Jean Hardman at 541-352-6691.

McIsaac’s Store in Parkdale will be starting a big remodeling project Monday, Feb. 3.

“There will be some big changes to enhance our meat, produce and cold beverage section, as well as some real changes in product for grocery,” said Manager Gary Dallas. “It is scheduled to take about five and a half weeks and it will be a little disruptive, so we thank our customers in advance for their patience.”

The Mount Hood Town Hall would like to thank Cooper Spur Restaurant for providing the Senior Meal at the Town Hall this past week.

“This is an incredible help and we appreciate their generosity,” said building administrator Nikki Stansel. “We encourage anyone who is interested in helping with the Senior Meals to stop by and help on Thursdays.”

For more information, contact Nikki at or by calling the Town Hall at 541-352-1078.
