Letters to the Editor for July 2

Earthquake plans?

We loved visiting the Columbia Gorge two years ago and had planned to return for an extensive visit in early fall. Having just read the earthquake story in Portland Monthly, we may be changing our minds.

What plans are being made in the Hood River/White Salmon area for the “overdue” earthquake?” How far east of Portland would be considered “safe?” Is anyone else freaked out?

Pay your share

Did you know that if you have an automatic sprinkling system in your yard, you are required by the City to have the backflow valve checked on your system every year by a certified plumber AND if it is not checked and the necessary paperwork sent to the City by a certain time, your water will be shut off? So, to those of us that are in compliance, great! To those that are not, in all fairness, pay your share. I know that I am tired of paying for the property owner that is in “noncompliance“.

Respect flag

Hood River is the place to be when it comes to “parade watching” on the 4 th of July!

Much time, love, and money is invested by a few for many; then have to witness the lack of respect for “Old Glory,” our stars and stripes, the pride of an American citizen.

Is it due to the ignorance of non citizens?

Then our “news media” may consider an educational article, titled “Flag Etiquette”

for the flag that represents “one nation under God.”

Park and text

With both hands on the wheel

And both eyes on the road

You’re a safe driver

And protecting your load.

You park … then you phone.

You park … then you text.

‘Cause a stationary car

Means a reduction in wrecks.

To L.J. Ross of Utopia, TX: I am a native Texan and lived there most of my life. We came to Oregon and specifically to Hood River in 2001 for our first trip. Came back and visited over 10 times and moved here in 2013. Heaven will have to be really special to improve on this area. Yes, there might be an earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, etc. You might experience a tornado, flash flooding, or horrendous heat in Texas also. We are specks on a big hot rock with a thin crust. Just try to enjoy wherever you are, but we will stay here. The following emergency plan comes from a T-shirt I bought on the coast this weekend. It applies to you in Texas, and anyone else facing natural peril; 1) Grab the beer!, 2) Run like hell!
