White Salmon River Fest and Symposium will flow with a variety of activities for all ages on July 9 in Husum, Wash.
This year’s event features Heather Kowalewski of All Adventures Rafting and Capo Rettig of World Class Kayak Academy as co-organizers, hosts and participants of the event, according to Jaco Klinkenberg, owner of Wet Planet Rafting & Kayaking in Husum, and founder of the annual event which was first held in 2006.
“It’s so great to see the event getting more and more traction amongst both non boating community as well as the river community each year. It’s really become a true community event. The White Salmon River has a great and growing community, and we already have great plans for the 2015 event.”
The program includes the Community Raft trip at 2 p.m., followed by an outfitter barbecue and a showing of the movie “DamNation” at 5:30 p.m., followed by a discussion panel. Sign up for all three activities for the super low price of only $27.50 per person (local resident price only) or join after the float for the barbecue and movie ($7.50 cash at the door – space permitting).
After the rafting trip, rafters and movie viewers are invited to a barbecue offered at the Husum Fire Hall by hosting outfitters Wet Planet and All Adventures Rafting.
The documentary film “DamNation” highlights dam removal stories, including the Elwha and White Salmon Rivers in Washington, the Rogue River in Oregon, and the Penobscot River in Maine. Following the movie, a panel of community leaders representing various user groups will engage in a discussion about the future use of the river. Community members representing any user group are encouraged to stay post movie and — respectfully — engage in the discussion.
“The objective of this panel discussion is to hear and consider the perspectives of different user groups on the future of the White Salmon River,” Kowalewski. Said. “The removal of the dam inevitably means change on the river and we have the potential to use this opportunity for collaborative community envisioning that allows all users of the river to work together. What are the exciting new potential uses and what are potential related concerns we need to jointly address.”
Reservations for the rafting trip, barbecue and movie can be made by calling1- 800-306-1673, 1-509-493-8989 or online at www.wetplanetwhitewater.com. Follow White Salmon River Fest on Facebook for event details.
Concluding the days’ events, celebrations continue at the Husum Riverside B&B & Ice House Café with food by Big Man’s Rotisserie — often seen boating on the river himself — and local brews by Everybody’s brewing provided by Husum resident, river guide, kayaker and musician Keel Brighton with the High Prairie Ramblers.
