CL Port forging ahead in commissioner search

The Port of Cascade Locks is making progress in filling a seat on its commission that has been vacant for the past two months.

Port Interim General Manager Paul Koch reported that the port has received four applications seeking the appointment for Position 1 on the five-member commission, which was vacated after former Port Commissioner Scot Sullenger resigned the position earlier this spring.

Koch reported two of the applicants are current members of the Cascade Locks City Council: Bobby Walker and Jeff Helfrich. Other applicants include Gyda Haight, whom Koch described as a “citizen activist,” and Aurora del Val, whom Koch described as a local resident who is “active” in the Columbia River Gorge Racing Association: a Cascade Locks nonprofit sailing organization.

The port planned to hold a special meeting June 10 to review the applicants’ letters of interest and decide the next steps in the planning process, according to Koch. No timeline was given on when the next commissioner might be selected.

The person appointed to the commission will fill out the remainder of Sullenger’s term, which expires June 30, 2015.
