With the retirement of Kim Vogel, principal at both Parkdale Elementary and Cascade Locks Elementary, Supt. Dan Goldman has developed a plan to provide needed, continuous leadership at both schools.

Vogel will continue to serve as part-time principal of Cascade Locks Elementary next year, maintaining continuous leadership to the students, staff and parents.

Parkdale Elementary will also receive continuous leadership from Hedberg, currently the vice principal at Hood River Middle School. Hedberg received unanimous support from an interview team made up of staff, parents, and administrators and will assume his new role after the end of this school year, according to Kevin Noreen, district human resources director.

In accepting this role next year, Hedberg will also be undertaking several district-wide duties involving the administration of several state and federal grants.

Hedberg was first hired by Hood River County School District in 2000 as a Spanish teacher and athletic director for Cascade Locks School. Hedberg moved to Wy’east Middle School where he also taught Spanish and served as the athletic director until 2006. In August 2006, he was hired as vice principal of Wy’east Middle School before coming to Hood River Middle School as the vice principal in 2011.

“Gus brings a deep sense of commitment to student success and to the community as a whole. He has demonstrated these commitments over his many years of service to the students and families of this district and will undoubtedly be a fantastic leader for Parkdale Elementary for years to come,” said Goldman.

The district has begun a search and hiring process for Hedberg’s position at Hood River Middle School, and a decision is expected by mid-June, according to Noreen.
