Second Saturday Dance May 10
The Second Saturday Country Dance is Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at the Rockford Grange, Barrett Road in Hood River. The caller will be Sue Baker and the band will be the Mill Creek String Band. Dance lessons will begin at 7 p.m. All ages welcome. No partner required. Family-friendly. All dances walked through first time.

Authors visit; workshop May 2-3
Waucoma Bookstore is hosting authors Ron Lovell and Nick Sharma for an author reception and book signing on Friday, May 2, from 5-8 p.m. at the bookstore (212 Oak St., Hood River). Lovell will be signing copies of the latest Thomas Martindale mystery, “Murder Times Two.” Sharma, an actor and screenwriter, will be signing his new book, “How to Be a Hero,” which he first wrote as the screenplay called “The Cup.” On Saturday, May 3, the authors will be presenting a writing workshop about self-publishing books through Columbia Arts’ new program The Creativity Lab.

Friday, May 2: Taarka 9:30 p.m. – indie folk, gypsy jazz, bluegrass
Described by SF Weekly as a “collision of Django Reinhardt and David Grisman,” Taarka is the new acoustic “supergroup presenting masterfully deep Americana and gypsy-jazz string band music,” led by the husband-and-wife team of David Pelta-Tiller (mandolin, tenor guitar, vocals) and Enion Pelta-Tiller (five-string violin, vocals).
David, a versatile picker raised in Virginia on a steady diet of bluegrass, Celtic, classical and gypsy-jazz, and Enion Pelta-Tiller, a classically trained violinist who can switch seamlessly between Bartoìk and bebop, began their journey together in 2001.
Saturday, May 3: Dancehall Days 9:30 p.m. – Covers from the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s.
Dancehall Days is a six-piece variety band featuring female and male vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums, bass, trumpet and percussion. Incredible variety and authenticity is what Dancehall Days delivers. They have been wowing audiences all over the Northwest and the word is now out, Dancehall is a powerhouse.
Dance the Cumbia May 9
The Secret Salsa Society has invited dog-loving instructors Lynn and Mark (dancethat.com) to teach Cumbia at Mt. View Grange in White Salmon on Friday, May 9. The lesson starts at 7:30 p.m., but come early and meet some of the Hood River Adopt A Dogs. Donations to Adopt A Dog will be accepted or bring durable toys or yummy training treats. All ages welcome, no partner or experience needed. Lessons are from 7:30-9 p.m. and the social dance goes until 10:30 p.m. Admission is $10.
