Busy week for boys tennis

A tie for first, an 8-0 sweep, a 6-2 win and a solid showing at a tough tournament — all in the last week — gives the Hood River Valley High School varsity boys tennis team key momentum as it approaches the all-important district tournament later this month.

The team started its busy week with a trip to Sandy for a four-way tournament between HRV, Sandy, Milton-Freewater and Estacada. Although court conditions from heavy rain the previous day posed challenges, HRV finished in a tie for first with Sandy, with Scottie Ziegner at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles duo of Victor Garibo and Billy Edwards finishing undefeated to take first place.

Positive results for coach Jon Hiatt and the Eagles continued last Tuesday, when the team hosted, and demolished, St. Helens in an 8-0 sweep. Scores were: Ziegner 6-0, 6-0; Cooper Holzman 6-3, 6-4; Omar Cornejo, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 10-8; Patrick Humann, 6-2, 6-4; Edwards/Garibo, 6-2, 6-2; Will Ferrick/Marten Sova, 2-6, 6-1, 10-4; Brandon Campos/Miguel De La Rosa, 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-6; Cole Shepherd/Mason McDowell, 6-4, 6-4.

The team continued its busy week of six matches in seven days with a dual Wednesday at The Dalles, where it finished with six wins and two losses. Ziegner continued his dominance as the team’s top singles player with a perfect, 6-0, 6-0 result. Humann also won in singles play, 6-2, 6-2. Holzman and Cornejo posted the team’s two losses of the day. All four HRV doubles pairs won, with scores as follows: Edwards/Garibo, 6-3, 6-3; Ferrick/ Sova, 6-4, 6-1; Campos/De La Rosa 6-0, 6-4; Shepherd/McDowell, 6-1, 6-2.

Most recently, the boys were in Redmond over the weekend for the two-day Central Oregon Duals, where they faced Redmond, Bend, Summit, Mountain View and Ridgeview. The team opened with a 6-2 win over Redmond before losing 6-2 to Bend, 8-0 to Summit and 5-3 to Ridgeview. HRV also lost a 4-4 tie with Mtn. View by game tally of 86-79. Ziegner highlighted singles action with four wins out of five matches, including a 6-4, 7-5 win over Phillip Atkinson, who defeated Ziegner in the consolation finals of the 2013 district tournament.
