This is a big weekend for local prep sports and the athletes and coaches who have worked all spring to represent the legacy of the Hood River Valley Eagles.
Tennis: Both HRV boys and girls tennis teams started their 5A Special District 1 tournaments Friday – the boys at Hermiston and the girls at Sunriver – and will play through Saturday afternoon. Representing No. 1 singles will be Scottie Ziegner for the boys and Maddie Graham for the girls and No. 1 doubles will be Billy Edwards and Victor Gabrillo for the boys and Olivia Newcomb and Ellie Webb for the girls.
HRV tennis is in an eight-team combined district with Columbia River and Intermountain Conference schools. Both teams have had a decent season thus far, but expect to see tough competition as they take on the superior Central Oregon teams, particularly Summit.
Track: HRV track and field is on the hunt for individual and team district accolades this weekend as the team competes in the Columbia River Conference championships Friday and Saturday in Hermiston.
Prior to the start of the meet Friday, the following Eagles held top CRC marks from events throughout the season:
Wyatt Weber, 100 meters; Jestena Mattson, 100 meters, 200 meters; Grace Grim, 800 meters, 1,500 meters; Sascha Bockius, 3,000 meters; girls 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay, Kassidy Davidson, Anna Schlosser, Jestena Mattson, Emily Viuhkola; Sebastian Barajas, discus; Patrick Crompton and Parker Kennedy, pole vault; Zoe Peterson, pole vault.
