Runners enjoyed the sunshine Wednesday at May Street for Dragon Dash, left, and Thursday at Westside for Wildcat Chase. The two events are annual fundraisers for school arts and fitness programs and other needs, and occasions for students, parents and some staff members to get out for a run together. Principal Kelly Beard of May Street and secretary Barb Cooper at Westside said both events were big successes, with virtually every student getting a 45-minute run in the sun. At both schools, kids collected pledges for laps around the course; results weren’t in yet, but the totals were expected to pass the $12,-13,000 raised at each school in 2013. At Westside, parents painted many kids’ faces with feline designs in honor of the occasion. Beard said neighbors of the school got behind the project, helping keep kids safe as they rounded the corners on the route around the school. “It such a great community effort. And they put up with our blaring music, which we appreciate,” Beard said. Westside kids enjoyed snacks of pears and watermelon.
