Local writer Jane Kirkpatrick speaks Oct. 10 in The Dalles

Wasco County Historical Society invites the public to hear award-winning Central Oregon author, Jane Kirkpatrick, discuss historical writing and her latest novel, “A Light in the Wilderness,” Oct. 10, from 3-6 p.m. at Riverenza, 401 E. 10th St., The Dalles.

The book, based on Letitia Carson, one of the first African-American women to cross the Oregon Trail in the 1840s, will be available for sale and signing. Letitia, at one time, was a slave and in her later life, owned property in Southern Oregon. Kirkpatrick states that “Letitia had reason to bring a lawsuit in Oregon in the 1850s following her husband’s death, and that’s likely the only reason we know about her story, as so many women’s stories are lost.”

The event is free; for more details call 541-980-7453.
