Justin Crosswhite and Lauren Robinson posted personal records and the Columbia River Conference’s fastest times of the season last weekend at the annual George Fox XC Classic at Willamette Mission State Park. The two, both juniors, led Hood River Valley High School varsity cross country at the highly-competitive meet that brought 75 teams from Oregon, Alaska, California, Idaho and Washington together for one last major contest before returning home to fine tune for district and state contests.
At the varsity boys’ No. 1 slot, Crosswhite was just three seconds from the elusive goal of breaking the 16-minute barrier in the 5,000 meter run. His time of 16:03.2 was enough for 16th place — a somewhat misleading result given that the first place finisher, Matthew Maton of Summit, was just six seconds faster. The time, a career personal record for Crosswhite, is the fastest time posted this season by any Columbia River Conference runner.
Leading the varsity girls’ team, Robinson posted an all-time PR of 19:42, which is currently the fastest girls’ CRC time by more than 20 seconds.
Also posting personal best times in the meet — held on a flat and fast course known for PR times — were Quinn Fetkenhour, Connor Traux, Jesse Wiley and Jacob Bromham for the boys and Chloe Clark for the girls (results below).
Coach Brandon Bertram said he was pleased with how the team competed at the meet and is excited to see how his runners progress, both physically and mentally, between now and the CRC championships next Saturday in Hermiston. At that meet, the top to boys and girls teams and the five fastest individual male and female finishers will advance to the state meet the following weekend at Lane Community College in Eugene.
