On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Hood River Fire Department, Hood River Police Department and Hood River County Prevention Partnership will be hosting a drug take back collection site at the Hood River Fire Department, 1785 Meyer Parkway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The program is anonymous and all efforts will be made to protect the anonymity of individuals disposing the medications. No questions of request for identification will be asked during the drop off.
The participants may dispose of the medication in its original container. When submitting the container, the individual is encourage to remove any indentifying information from the prescription label. This can be done by removing the label or utilizing permanent marker.
All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup should remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
Note: Intra-venous solutions, injectables, syringes, chemotherapy medications or medical waste WILL NOT be accepted due to potential hazard posed by the blood borne pathogens.
The local, state, tribal and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration partnership has removed over 1.4 million pounds (2,123 tons) of medications from circulation over the last four years at National Drug Take-Back Day events. last spring, residents of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington turned over 31,700 pounds of expired and unwanted medications for safe and proper disposal at 189 take-back sites in the Northwest.
The public continues to embrace the opportunity these Take-Back Day events provide to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, or unwanted medications. Prescription drugs that linger in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. More Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens and inhalants combined. Due to the overwhelming public demand and response, we are excited to host the event.
