HR man cited in head-on collision on Highway 35

BOTH DRIVERS were hurt in Saturday’s head-on wreck on Highway 35 near Pine Grove.

According to Oregon State Police, Servando Zanora Avendano, 26, of Hood River, has been cited for DUII, Reckless Driving, and Assault in the Third Degree in connection with a two-vehicle head-on crash Saturday on Highway 35 near Pine Grove.

Both drivers were seriously injured in the 7:04 a.m. crash.

OSP reports state that Avendano was traveling south in a 1990 Nissan pickup in the northbound lane when it was involved in a head-on collision with a 1994 Honda Civic. After impact, the pickup came to rest on its side along the northbound shoulder and the Honda was resting in the middle of the highway.

Avendano was extricated by firefighters and transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanual Medical Center with serious injuries. Preliminary investigation incidates alcohol is a contributing factor.

The Honda’s driver, Francisco Castro Gusman, age 21, from Parkdale, was also seriously injured and tranported by ground ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University.

OSP troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Trooper Matthew Zistel is the lead investigator.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Hood River Police Department and local fire personnel.
