Eighteen members of the Hood River Valley High School Speech and Debate team travelled to Hermiston April 11 to compete for the District championship.
Besides winning the team competition, HRV will also send 12 competitors to the State Competition at Western Oregon University next week.
Seniors going on to State are Dakota Bickle, Lucas Campos-Davis, Nils Engbersen and Garrett Kelly.
In addition to their competition schedule this school year, the seniors have volunteered many hours to mentor younger team members, teaching the various events and debate preparation, according to advisor Delona Campos-Davis.
“The team has been in a building year, with many freshman and others new to competitive speech,” Campos-Davis said. “Aside from the individual events and types of speeches, students improved their research and writing skills and learned to give constructive feedback to teammates.”
