The HRV girls wrestling team traveled to Richland, Wash., earlier this week to get one more tournament in before the holidays hit, competing in the Hanford Girls Winter Cup at Hanford High School.
The Eagles had “a great day,” according to HRV Head Coach Trent Kroll, placing fifth of 27 teams with 77.5 points, and producing six placers, three of whom found their way to the podium. Sunnyside High School, from Sunnyside, Wash., took first place overall in the tournament which 350 girls attended. HRV was the sole Oregon team in attendance.
“It was pretty, pretty incredible,” he said. “Really excited. At the break, all of our girls were still in the tournament. We had five in the semifinals. The girls competed at 120 percent; the girls are getting tough competition.”
After first-round byes, both Monique Verduzco and Payton Rigert went 3-0 in their matches to win the 125-pound and 155-pound weight classes, respectively, of their 16-person brackets. Also gracing the podium was Joanna Endow (3-1, 130 pounds), who placed third.
“Monique was a real standout, beating some really tough girls,” Kroll noted. “Payton really dominated; she’s a level above and wrestling really, really well.”
Also placing for the Eagles were Alexis McCafferty (115 pounds), Grace Miller (130 pounds), and Elena Kroll (135 pounds), who all went 3-2 to place fifth in their respective weight classes.
The girls will be splitting up for competitions next week, with some heading to Arizona for a clinic, and others heading to Elmira for a tournament on Dec. 30.
