Local Farmers’ Markets seeking new vendors

Spring is in the air and farmers’ market season is just around the corner. There are 9 markets throughout the Gorge preparing to open in the coming months and they need more vendors. People with backyard garden surplus, a few extra dozen eggs, cut flowers, jams and more are a wonderful addition to the market. It can be as simple as harvesting the plums from the tree in your yard and selling them at your local market one week.

“Each new vendor adds to the variety at the market and helps create a vibrant community gathering,” said Bruce Bolme, co-founder of the White Salmon Farmers’ Market. New vendors have found selling at the market a fun way to engage with their community and make some extra cash.

The markets of the Gorge serve a variety of important roles in our rural region. Markets become the gathering place where people can share recipes, catch up with old friends, and access community resources.

“When more than 50 percent of the community shows up for opening day of the Mosier Farmers’ Market, it becomes clear that the market serves a vital role for keeping everyone connected,” said Todd Dierker with Gorge Grown Food Network. Programs for low-income access ensure that everyone has access to the incredible offerings at the markets. Kids have found selling at market a fun way to gain some basic skills, meet new friends, and earn some summer money, too.

To make it even easier, most markets have Community Tables where you can sell your products without bringing tables or canopies. It is easy and makes a stronger market when new faces get involved. When you join the market as a vendor, musician, or volunteer, you help sustain the energy and community building power of a farmers’ market. Now is the time to consider planting a few extra rows of snap peas, potatoes or raspberries. Join your local market this summer and help celebrate the local harvest in your town.
