CSRT competes at U16 Can-Am Champs

This past week, you may have noticed a few ski racers missing from the mountain. Three athletes from the Cooper Spur Race Team were selected to the Pacific Northwest Ski Association’s U16 Western Regional Team.

Melissa Nardone, a Hood River Valley High School freshman, Carter Rigert, an eighth-grader at Horizon Christian School and Louise Howe, an eighth-grader from Henkle Middle School in White Salmon, were excited to be chosen. Last week, a team of eight boys and eight girls traveled to compete in the U16 Can-Am Western Championships at Apex Mountain Resort in British Columbia. The championship include the Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super G events.

Carter Rigert said, “This was the best ski race I have ever been to. The people that came along all got to know each other and made the experience great.”

Athletes from the Cooper Spur Race Team have qualified before and the race has always been a highlight of the season. Melissa Nardone just recovered from a broken leg last year and was overjoyed to have had such a good season coming off an injury.

“I liked meeting different people from throughout the Northwest that enjoyed skiing as much as I do,” she said.

The athletes got the opportunity to ski with some of the top Canadian Ski Racers. The U16 Can-Am Western Championships was a great experience for all the ski racers that attended.
