The HRV cross country squads got a good look at their league opponents on Thursday at the Wildhorse Invitational in Pendleton, which served as a Columbia River Conference preview of sorts as it was the first time the Eagles have raced against all their CRC competition in one race this season.
For the girls, the teams repping the CRC were in an extremely tight pack. HRV placed third overall with 100 points, losing to Union (51) and barely losing to Pendleton (93). HRV edged The Dalles by 10 points (fourth place) and beat Hermiston by 21 (fifth).
HRV ran a combined race, with JV and varsity runners mixed together, which created some interesting results, allowing JV runners to fight their way into the top seven, which some did.
It was a slow race, with no varsity runners setting a personal record or a season best time. For the second race in a row, Daisy Dolan was the fastest on the girl’s team, running the 3.1-mile race in 20 minutes, 0.7 seconds and finishing fifth overall. Captain Lauren Robinson was close behind at 20:12 (eighth), Josie Peterson ran a 21:28.9 (23rd), and Denali Emmons cruised to a time of 22:16.7 (38th). Katie Perkins, a freshman JV runner, found her way in the top five with a PR of 22:47.5 (46th), Sophia Marble was on her heels with a time of 23:09.3 (50th), and Chloe Clark, a sophomore JV runner, rounded out the top seven with a time of 24:13.1 that was good for 72nd place.
The boys went light on varsity runners for their combined race, which included Connor Truax, Elkin Parker, and Finn Peterson. Again, the race was on the slow side, with no varsity runner and only a few JV runners hitting PR times. The boys placed seventh overall with a score of 197, losing to Hermiston (first, 57), Pendleton (third, 93), and The Dalles (fifth, 141).
Truax was first for the boys, finishing fifth overall with a time of 16:41.4. He was followed by Parker (25th, 17:49.4) and Peterson (52nd, 18:36.9).
Following the varsity runners were Austin Marques (56th, 18:43.8, PR), Joseph Slover (67th, 19:03.5), Gabriel Campos-Davis (80th, 19:14.7, PR), and Muir Emmons (94th, 19:32.4) in the top seven.
Full results of both races are available on racing website Athletic.net.
HRV’s next race will be the CRC Championships that will be held Saturday, Oct. 24 at Sorosis Park in The Dalles. The girls varsity race starts at 10 a.m. and the boys starts at 10:45.
