Wine takes center stage this week, weekend

Those interested in learning the fundamentals of wine appreciation will want to join Phelps Creek Vineyards and the Hood River County Library District for a hands-on workshop Sept. 3, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Parkdale Community Center. Learn how to identify different aromas and flavors in wine and how climate, location, soil and different winemaking techniques can affect a wine.

Participants will receive a certificate for a complementary wine tasting at Phelps Creek Vineyards Tasting Room in Hood River. The program is free, but participants must be 21 and over. For more info, Hood River County Library District at 541-386-2535,, or

Then, take your new skills around the Gorge for Crush Kickoff Weekend Sept. 5-7. “The Crush” is a significant time for wineries — the processing of grapes from whole fruit into wine. The wineries of the Columbia River Gorge will each have a unique Labor Day weekend offering, including games and prizes, new wine releases, live music, special food parings and discounts.
