Education Foundation announces scholarships

Ten college scholars will receive a total of $20,000 in scholarships this year from the Hood River County Education Foundation (HRCEF). According to HRCEF Board President Chuck Bugge, this brings the total Ed Foundation scholarship awards for the 2015-16 school year to over $65,000 and a total of 66 scholarships awarded to HRVHS class of 2015 and these continuing college students.

Scholarship winners are:

Ruth and Horace Daum Memorial Scholarships:

Nursing: Edward Baeza-Sonato, a junior at Columbia Gorge Community College; Katherine Caulkins, a senior at OSU-La Grande; and Madelin Herman, a sophomore at Linn Benton Community College.

Music: Kendra Apland, a junior at Whitworth University; Tanis Guzman, a junior at University of Portland; and Lauren Gray, a junior at University of Puget Sound.

Science: Aleah DeHart, a senior at OSU; Gilberto Galvez, a junior at Linfield; and Kirra Paulus, a senior at Montana State University.

Jesse Elder Scholarship: Tanis Guzman, a junior at University of Portland.

“It’s exciting to read these applications and hear how students are building on their K-12 education in Hood River County Schools in their college work. It reminds us how critical the work of our schools is in preparing our students for the future,” Bugge said

One of the largest HRCEF scholarship funds is the Ruth and Horace Daum Memorial Scholarship fund. Annually, up to nine college students, three each in nursing, music, and science-related fields, receive a scholarship to continue their college careers. An additional continuing college scholarship is funded by the Jesse Elder Fund.

Anyone wishing to support a college scholarship may donate at Even small donations can be dedicated to a special person and the honored person’s name will appear on the HRCEF website.
