Wy’east Fire District firefighter Dave Rummel sprays water on a permitted burn that got out of hand April 21 near Panorama Point. The landowner, Dave Short, left, was burning brush in mid-afternoon under a canopy of Douglas fir when the blaze picked up some wind and spread. Firefighters responded to the location, up a long dirt driveway due east of Hood River County’s Panorama Point Park, on Eastside Road near Pine Grove. Chief Greg Borton said crews put 1,200 gallons of water on the fire, which also spread into a nearby trash heap connected to an abandoned trailer home site just down the hill. Oregon Department of Forestry responded along with firefighters from Wy’east’s Pine Grove and Odell stations. Firefighters including Tom Seiverkropp and Tiffany Campbell pulled out mattresses and other debris and sprayed them thoroughly. Borton said the fire could have quickly spread into more trees and brush, and that it underscores the need for anyone doing a permitted burn to make sure they have ample water at hand, along with hand tools to help stop the fire and prevent its spread.
