The April 16 article on the growth of free-standing community libraries in Hood River left out a new one at 24th and Sherman, and another on Park Place Loop. Both are registered and on the map at the non-profit littlefreelibrary.org, along with one at Montello and Ninth streets. (The article mentioned a mini-library at May Street near the elementary school, though it is not on the map.)

Lucy Fine, a Hood River Valley High School student, is creating free book sites, based on the Little Free Libraries idea, to be placed at Children’s Park and the Hood River Aquatic Center, and a third location on Belmont. See Four to Go on page A1 for an update.

“We have been thrilled with our library so far,” writes Suzanne Cross. “Each day people bring new books and take some home. This weekend I met a neighbor named Linda. We both lived here for years and never met and she stopped to tell me how happy she was about the library. We must’ve talked for 45 minutes and learned that we had a lot in common. That’s what I hope the libraries do for our neighborhoods, remind us that we are all part of a community. We hope to be able to sell eggs from our library this summer when our chickens start laying more readily. Our library will be a books and eggs location. The kids plan to donate the money from the eggs to Hukari Animal Shelter.”
