The Hood River Valley Swim Team (HRVST) “tore up the pool” at the 11 and over state swimming championships held at Mt. Hood Community College this past weekend, said Head Coach Shelly Rawding. “With 80-percent personal best times achieved, the team has much to be proud of.”

Dhani Freeland, who will be attending the University of Idaho this fall and swimming for the Vandals, achieved Futures qualifying times in three events — and set new HRVST team records in those three events as well.

Freeland broke the 15-18 and senior girls 100-meter butterfly team record with a time of 1 minute, 4.87 seconds. The previous team record was set by Kim Simpson of 1:07.03 in 1994 (one of the oldest records still on the books for the HRVST). She broke the 15-18 and senior girls 100 freestyle team record with a 59.53. The previous record was set by Bethany Pendelton in 1998 with a 59.58. Freeland also lowered her own 200 Individual Medley (IM) record with a 2:25-flat. Additionally, Freeland won a state title in these three events, setting her apart from the competition as she won the 15 and over girls high-point award for the meet. Rounding out the competition, Freeland also finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:50.45), fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.31) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:13.30).

Danielle Miller swam to a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:10.56), and 12th-place finishes in both the 400 IM (5:38.53) and 200 backstroke (2:34.75).

Erin Nelson swam in finals in the 200 free and finished 15th with a 2:20.03, swam to a 23rd-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:38.56) and finished 20th in the 400 freestyle (5:38.53).

Faith Ocheskey led off the 200 freestyle relay with a personal best time of 29.54 in the 50 free.

Nora Sandoval finished 15th in the 400 free (5:35.52) and Thea Smtih was 13th with a 5:34.79 in the 400 free in the 11-year-old age group.

Nadia Smith moved up from 17th to ninth place in the 200 butterfly with a seven-second drop in the finals (2:40.82) and also finished 28th in the 100 butterfly.

Kylie Webb finished sixth in the 400 IM (5:26.86) and 14th in the 100 butterfly (1:11.02).

The HRVST also had four relays that competed at state to help the girls team achieve 10th place in Oregon this past weekend. The 200 free relay (Ocheskey, Freeland, Webb, and Nelson), 200 medley (Miller, Freeland, Webb, and Nelson) and 400 freestyle relays (Nelson, Webb, Smith, and Freeland) all placed seventh. The 400 medley relay of Miller, Freeland, Webb and Nelson placed fourth.
