The HRV girls basketball team (1-2) already have a third of the wins they achieved in the 2015-16 season, defeating La Grande (0-2) by a score of 47-41 in the opening round of a tournament in Madras last weekend.
The Eagles utilized a fast start that saw HRV double up on the Tigers, 12-6, in the first quarter and then head into the half with a 24-14 advantage. HRV outscored La Grande by three points in the third and then staved off a 17-10 rally in the four quarter by the Tigers to grab the first win of the season.
Abby Kinoshita was a jack-of-all-trades for HRV, achieving a double-double with a team-high 10 points and 12 rebounds, adding two assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Head Coach Donnie Herneisen called it “a big win… over a solid La Grande team,” noting that HRV’s defense “stepped up big and created some good transition scoring opportunities.”
In the next game of the tournament on Saturday, HRV played host Madras (3-0), losing 33-28 in a tight, defensive battle that only saw the Eagles score three points in the first quarter. It was Lauren Orr’s turn to shine in that game, recording a team-best 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting (64 percent) and just missing a double-double with nine rebounds.
HRV hits the road this week with a contest at Heritage High in Vancouver on Tuesday (results not available at press time) and then another on Friday at Redmond (0-1) at 7 p.m.
