HRV wrestling received the same place they did last year at the Special District 4 tournament, but this year, the team will be sending even more athletes to the state championship.

Noah Wachsmuth, Jason Shaner, Oscar Villegas, Trystan Fisher, and Adrian Ramirez will all be heading to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland this weekend to compete in the OSAA 5A state wrestling championships. The athletes qualified for state after placing fourth or higher at districts this past weekend.

With 175 points, HRV as a team placed fourth out of nine squads at the tourney, which was held at Mountain View, and the standings were nearly identical to last year’s results. Hermiston (435), the perennial favorite in the district, won once again followed by Redmond (347), and Bend (233.5). HRV edged Mountain View (173.5) and also beat Pendleton (132), Summit (126.5), Ridgeview (31), and The Dalles 28). Instead of four wrestlers going to state, this year, the Eagles are sending five.

Nobody for HRV won a district title this year, but Wachsmuth (frosh), Shaner (sophomore), and Oscar Villegas (senior), all received second place in their respective weight classes. Shaner, the only one of the group who went to state last year, had the best chance of grabbing a title, narrowly losing the 126-pound championship match in a 7-6 decision.

Rounding out the crew to state were Ramirez (sophomore) and Fisher (senior), who both placed fourth.
